Even before going vegan, I was interested in finding tasty substitutes which satisfy any potential cravings for animal products. Here are some of the best plant-based products, which we have found to be ideal:
Butter = Pure; Vitalite
Milk = any plant milk e.g. almond, soya, oat, rice, coconut
Yoghurt = Alpro, Provamel etc.
Cheese = Violife; Nutritional yeast flakes are also great for adding a cheesy, nutty taste, (and full of vitamin B12); Sainsbury’s freefrom cheese range, including soft cheese and Wensleydale with cranberries!
Meat = Fry’s chicken-style strips, beef-style strips, burgers, nuggets, pies, schnitzels etc.; Linda McCartney sausages and burgers; Sainsbury’s own vegan mince and meatballs; vegan Quorn etc…
Honey = maple syrup; agave syrup; vegan honey
Chocolate = lots of ‘accidentally vegan’ dark chocolate; Vego; various freefrom milk-style chocolates
Cream = coconut cream; Soyatoo squirty cream
Mayonnaise = Vegenaise; vegan Hellman’s
Egg = Orgran egg substitute (for baking); tofu (for scrambling); the Vegan Egg company; bananas etc. (for baking)
Ice-cream = Lots of dairy-free brands, including Swedish Glace, Booja Booja, Sainsbury’s own…
Sugar = Xylitol sweetener (a healthy alternative to sugar) NB: sugar manufacturing in the UK is suitable for vegans, but products which are manufactured in the US or elsewhere might have used bone char, so it is worth researching any foreign products! I made this mistake with Fireball whisky 😦
Also, here is a useful list of well-known treats, snacks and ingredients that are not necessarily healthy, but can be very handy if you are in a rush (or are just very hungry!)
NB: Always check the label, just in case, as recipes change all the time!
