A very foodie week: London and other things :)

Hello everyone! This last week has been eventful and has included lots of foodie adventures for me to write about – some familiar to me, some new…

Alex and I have just got back from a few days away in London, where we did lots of walking as usual, sightseeing, and trying yummy vegan nosh πŸ˜€ I have already posted about some of these places, so please forgive any repetition, but a few places were also new to me. It was really fun to show Alex around and introduce him to some of my favourite London eateries and also explore some new ones πŸ™‚

Sunday was my usual pilgrimage to get a plate of literally everything at Tibits and a delish ice cream at Yorica:

Our hotel was very basic and didn’t include any breakfast, but we were lucky to discover a little place called Cafe Mignon just around the corner, which did a nice vegan cooked breakfast which was a good start to the day:

Monday also included a curry at Sagar, which was lovely as usual, and also a vegan mint-choc ice cream fromΒ  a stall at Greenwich Market (my favourite flavour!). Also, we popped to the pub in the evening, where I had a glance at their menu out of curiosity and was surprised to see vegan ‘fish’ and chips was one of their mains. We didn’t have t as we’d already eaten, but it was encouraging to see it there nonetheless!

On Tuesday I took Alex to Mildreds, where it was busy as ever and we treated ourselves to some cocktails (mine had charcoal in it so was black and looked very dramatic!) and a burger and katsu curry πŸ™‚

It was a lovely few days away and coming back has been quite disorientating! Hopefully we will be off on another adventure in the near future… πŸ™‚

Another thing that happened this week was making vegan pizza from scratch (dough and everything!) and our friends’ house. It was very filling and had loads of toppings including vegan cheese of course! Those are sundried tomatoes on top btw πŸ˜€

Also, we went to a cool place called Chance and Counters in Bristol, where you can eat, drink and play games. It’s really chilled and they have a vegan menu. We spent quite a few hours there πŸ™‚

Lastly, I would recommend trying this flavoured milk from Alpro: it’s delicious in coffee with its caramel flavour. If you enjoy caramel lattes, get this!

Wagamama’s ‘Vegatsu’ curry!

You have probably heard that Wagamama recently launched a vegan version of their famous Katsy Curry… Well I finally tried it on Tuesday at their Bristol branch, and want to give it a special mention, as it was delicious πŸ™‚

I’ve never actually has their katsu curry of any kind before, as I went vegan before visiting Wagamama’s for the first time, so this was a nice first experience of it. It consists of strips of breaded seitan, curry sauce, rice and a salad. I enjoyed this particular seitan very much, whereas sometimes I am not too keen as it can be rubbery. Alex was also a big fan of this, and he had the version made with breaded sweet potato instead (which can also be made vegan if requested!)

Of course, Wagamama has quite a big selection of other vegan dishes; this is just their most recent addition πŸ™‚ Do go along and try them for yourself! (By the way, I am not sponsored to mention places – my opinions are purely because I want to recommend decent vegan nosh πŸ˜€ )

I also want to mention Swoon Gelato because I tried their ‘dairy-free chocolate sorbet’ on the same day, which was possibly the creamiest, richest, most delicious vegan ice-cream I’ve had so far.

I am not a silly yak!! :)

Ciao peeps! I am very happy to report that I am NOT a celiac. (Woohoo! Celebratory fireworks etc…) I got my test results back yesterday for gluten and iron and they came back totally healthy and normal.

I am very very relieved about this as, although it is perfectly possible to be vegan and gluten-free, as lots of people are, it would have stressed me out so much and been a spanner in the works, as a lot of my favourite foods, including some meat substitutes, contain gluten. Of course, this is not to say that I might not be a bit gluten INTOLERANT. But at least I don’t have to avoid it completely for the sake of my long-term health πŸ™‚

As well as that good news, I have another new eatery recommendation for you: The Lounges chain, who have just got a new extensive vegan menu: http://thelounges.co.uk/menus/ Alex and I went to one in Bristol a couple of days ago, where we tried their jackfruit burger and falafel & avocado wrap.

Other adventures included Shakeaway, which has lots of vegan-friendly options if you use soya milk and an accidentally-vegan flavour, such as skittles, any fruit, jelly tots etc etc. πŸ™‚ I tried Skittles and it was delish!

Ciao peeps! Well it’s been a funny old few weeks, and both my blogs have been a bit neglected as a result (sorry!)

What I do have this time is a few new food pics and a new vegan-friendly eatery (wooo!) which I have recently visited with my boyfriend:

The eatery in question is called Oowee Diner; they have two branches and the one we visited is in Southville, Bristol. They do serve meat as well as veggie and vegan items, but the vegan options they do have are brilliant! Some of the options are greyed-out here cause they were sold out at the time I took the screenshot (but I suppose that’s good in a way, as it shows they’re popular!) I will add Oowee to the Shops & eateriesΒ page as well…

And a few pics from my recent eatings out: gluten-free mushroom burger from Chapel Arts Cafe; mini brekkie from Green Rocket (lovely apart from the rather tough greens); and a Vego monstershake from VX (a thing of true beauty)!


We plan to do a lot of cooking together, probably using the Bosh! cookbook I mentioned last time – it looks awesome and I can’t wait to get cracking with some recipes πŸ˜€ He is vegetarian and is enthusiastic with trying vegan substitutes whenever I use them πŸ™‚ I did cook some tacos on Tuesday which he enjoyed (yay!)

Bosh! book and another photo dump!

Hello everyone, wanted to mention the new Bosh! recipe book I ordered the other day, which I am very excited to dive into. Now I just have to find the time to buy a load of ingredients and actually cook something new! I have been watching their online recipe videos for months, so I’m very glad I now have all of them on paper to look at properly πŸ™‚ Go and buy this if you can:

And here are pics from a Zizzi meal I had the other evening with my Dad: They have a new starter called “beetballs” which come in a tomato and vegan mozzarella sauce and it delicious. I also had my favourite ragu, and then their dessert calzone, which was much nicer than the one I had a while ago, so I think they must have improved the recipe.

In a couple of weeks, I have chosen to have a food sensitivity test to see whether I am at all intolerant to gluten or anything else. I really hope I’m not! Although I know there is a lot of support and advice available for people who are vegan and gluten-free, the thought of it feels a little overwhelming :/ So please send healthy thoughts to me as I am a bit anxious about it.

A pretty regular food shop :)

Hello everyone! It’s been a little while again since I last posted cause it’s been a busy time recently: I’ve started a new job and been productive making lots of new paintings.

For this post, I thought I’d keep it pretty simple and share another shopping photo from my last visit to Sainsbury’s, as it’s been ages since I posted one, and they had a few new items which I picked up and want to review:

So, as well as a couple of basic items, I also chose some official vegan Cornettos, a carton of Mylk, Meridian curry sauces and silken tofu.

  • The Cornettos were very nice, but I thought they could have benefited even more from some jam or extra chocolate running through them as they were a little on the plain side for me. Overall I prefer the Tesco freefrom ones, although I suppose it depends how sweet you like them πŸ™‚
  • I was a bit disappointed by Mylk, owing to the fact that it separated in my tea and coffee 😦 Now, I don’t actually know whether this is a problem I have with my water or kettle or something, because I do find that most milks I try separate in hot drinks. The Alpro original and the Oatly barista are currently the only ones which DON’T separate! However, I do think they have done a very good job of replicating the dairy milk taste. I might use the rest of it in porridge instead πŸ™‚
  • The Meridian curry sauces have become a staple in my kitchen cupboard, and I always pick up a couple of them when I go to Sains. They make curries so quick and are delicious. They have korma and tikka masala varieties, which are my two favourites anyway!
  • Lastly, the silken tofu is for making scrambled ‘egg’, as we finally located some black salt the other day which gives a good flavour. Looking forward to trying it…

Also, just a few pics from the last couple of weeks. Firstly, this is one of my favourite quick and easy meals at the moment: Quorn spicy chicken-style burgers accompanied by salad, corn-on-the-cob, and some Vegenaise.

TIP: it’s so easy to cook corn in the microwave: put it in a container with a splash of water and heat it for about 3 mins, turning it over half way through. Put some vegan butter and black pepper on it too!

Lastly, I went on an unexpected trip to London on Sunday, helping out on a tour for some Italian students. In my free time, I knew I had to go to Yorica πŸ˜€ This was cookies and cream flavour ice-cream in a cone, with pieces of brownie and hearts on top:

Hello everyone! Well I did say it would be a while before I posted again, due to spending a lot of time invigilating at my art exhibition. However, I have managed to accumulate quite a few photos over the past two/three weeks, so thought I should post them here as a general update…

A couple of recent recipes

Ciao peeps! Hope you’re all enjoying the “Beast from the East” and haven’t turned into icicles! I have a lot of exciting things planned this month, so am very happy that March is finally here πŸ˜€

I thought I’d share a couple of meals that I’ve had this week, including one simple recipe, as I haven’t posted that sort of thing in a while… These two include useful supermarket finds so are quick and easy to make:

1: Spicy burgers with “all the trimmings”

I absolutely love making quick, easy, but very tasty meals using a vegan item I enjoy, and then adding fresh ingredients. This is a good example, using Quorn hot and spicy burgers and then steaming some mini corn-on-the-cobs and adding salad and sauces.

2: Easy cheesy pasta

This is slightly more complicated, but not by much: I followed the recipe instructions on this (very cheap) vegan cheese sauce mix, and added some fried baby button mushrooms and peas, before mixing in cooked pasta πŸ™‚

Cooking doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming; you choose the recipe, depending how much time you have!

The new “Kevin” vegan pie :D

Last night I tried the brand new Kevin vegan pie from Pieminister! I happened to visit a pub called The Raven which is in Bath city centre a couple of nights ago, to go to their Artbar event, and saw that Pieminister supplies their kitchen and they had a big notice up about the new vegan pie, which is affectionately and unusually called Kevin (maybe to attract attention, as it’s a new product?) I had also seen this advertised outside the Pieminister shop in Bristol. So the following evening – last night – I went back to try it, and it was really delicious!

It is made with British chestnut mushrooms, tomato and red wine with baby onions, red quinoa and thyme, and I had it with chunky chips and minted mushy peas πŸ™‚

I am finding it so encouraging that more and more places are adding and increasing their vegan options lately πŸ™‚ I really do think that veganism is beginning to gather momentum and, although it will still take a while, that this spells the beginning-of-the-end of the animal product industries…

Here’s hoping. For the animals and for ourselves ❀

Some newly discovered thingies :)

Yesterday afternoon, Jacob and I had a fun time going to VX Bristol for the first time, which is a really awesome little cosy diner-style cafe and shop, which is 100% vegan and does a menu of “vegan junk food”! I predict that we will go there many many more times…

I’m hoping that, in the future, it may be able to move closer to central Bristol and drum up even more business, cause it’s quite out-of-the-way at the moment, but very popular nevertheless πŸ™‚ That’s what recently happened with Temple of Hackney; it became so popular that they’ve been able to open a bigger new restaurant in Camden!

We had a quesadilla, burrito, black forest cake and a cookie sandwich!

Later on, before going to karaoke, we went for a coupe of drinks in Wetherspoons, and saw that they have a new vegan dish on their menu: teriyaki noodles! We tried them and they are very tasty but also quite healthy-looking. Always nice to see new plant-based items appearing on chain menus πŸ™‚
